I didn’t set out to be “the return guy.”

I was born and raised in the U.S. to Somali immigrants. I did what I thought I was supposed to do. I broke into tech, worked in Silicon Valley, and built a career in marketing and product management with venture-backed startups, including YC companies.

From the outside, it looked like success. But inside, I felt disconnected from home, from purpose, from ownership.

Then I made the leap. No safety net, no connections. I packed my bags and moved to Rwanda to work in Africa’s tech ecosystem.

Over the next few years, I worked across 10 countries. I consulted, partnered with venture capital firms and startups, scouted founders, interviewed hundreds of ecosystem players, mentored entrepreneurs, and even built software tools that are still in use today.

It wasn’t easy. I stumbled. I wasted time. I spent money I didn’t need to spend. And I learned through trial, error, and a lot of persistence how to navigate life and business on the continent.

I’m still learning. I’m still building. I haven’t “arrived.” But if I knew then what I know now, my journey back would have been so much smoother.
